History

New Horizons of Northwest Florida, Inc. is a local organization which was originally established as “The Northwest Florida Crippled Children Association” on January 10, 1942, to serve individuals suffering from Polio.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #33 saw a need to serve and started the first home to meet the needs of those in the community. Licensed in 1978 as an Intermediate Care Facility for the Developmentally Disabled, the first in the Pensacola Florida area.

Results

The New Horizons Agency employs around 100 staff members that provide care to 60-70 residential and community consumers. All members of our staff are trained to provide an exceptional level of care to each individual. The management staff has tenure from a year to over 40 years working with persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

What is an ICF?

Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF/IIDs)

ICF/IIDs provide health and rehabilitative services to individuals with developmental disabilities in a protected residential setting.  Services include ongoing evaluation, service planning, 24-hour supervision, coordination, and integration of health/rehabilitative services to help individuals with severe disabilities function at their greatest ability.  ICF/IIDs feature “active treatment” which means consistent, specialized and generic training, treatment, and health services.  Individuals served in ICF/IIDs tend to be the most severely disabled, including those on respirators and feeding tubes.  ICF/IIDs are designed to provide the highest level of intervention and supports funded by the federal government for people with developmental disabilities.

How is cost for care paid?

ICF/IID care is 100% Medicaid funded, there is no ability to serve individuals through other funding sources.

The ICF/IID program is highly regulated by the federal government with the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) providing licensure approval and compliance oversight.

What is the required age for admission?

All ICF/IID placements are approved by the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD).

Age criteria for admission is determined by the individual facilities.

How do I apply for admission for a loved one?

All ICF/IID placements are approved by the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD).  Interested family members may contact the Agency for Persons with Disabilities to begin the application process.

What is the required Diagnosis?

Many ICF/IID residents are non-ambulatory and/or have seizure disorders, behavior problems, mental illnesses, visual or hearing impairments, or a combination of these conditions.  Almost ¼ (23%) require 24-hour nursing services and a medical care plan in addition to their services plans.
